Chapter Seventeen
The transport doors once again locked into the open position. Iris and her three Diviners maintained their stance against the wall. Five soldiers immediately marched through the doorway, two stopping in front of the passengers with hands held ready on their weapons. The other three ran around to check the transport for contraband or hidden passengers. Within five minutes, they concluded their search. They then moved to stand next to the other two soldiers, mimicking their rigidity.
âCheck complete!â a soldier called out loudly, keeping his eyes trained on the passengers.
At that, a man strode purposefully into the transport, stopped in front of the passengers and studied them intently. Maintaining his serious frown, he gave a deep bow.
âWelcome to Alaster, Great Diviners. I am Flyn, Master of the Transports.â He rose from his bow and directed his gaze to Iris. âFor what purpose has your party come to Alaster?â
âWe have come to meet with the king,â Iris answered and held out the scroll from Saunskirt.
Flyn motioned to one of the soldiers, who stepped forward and retrieved the scroll from Iris. Flyn took it, unbound the leather tie around it, and unrolled it just enough to inspect the seal at the bottom. He took his time reviewing it, angling it in the light in different ways, bringing it close to his eyes and then holding it back again. Finally, he seemed satisfied with its authenticity and raised his eyes back to Iris and nodded.
âVery well.â As he spoke, the soldiers moved forward and unstrapped each of them. âYou will be escorted immediately to the palace by carriage.â
The five guards proceeded to stand around Iris and the others as they got into position. The soldiers then moved to guide them from the transport and to the carriage. This time, Iris felt a little surer of herself as she had a better idea of what to expect. Even so, upon exiting the transport, no manner of description could have prepared her for the awe-inspiring sight before her. To put it simply, Alaster was massive! Yet even that word didnât capture its amazing ornateness. The transport station consisted of a consecutive series of enormous pointed stone arches that stood over the road that the transports passed through and were a good twenty feet higher than the transports themselves. A platform sat level to the transport door and ran the length of the station. As the group walked past the arches, they came to a gigantic gate, one of the four entrances through the wall that encompassed all of Alaster. Each gate was placed at one of the cardinal directions.
Do not gawk! Do not gawk! Do not gawk! In vain, Iris commanded herself to act calmly as they approached the gate. The gate stood three stories tall while the wall was about six stories. The wall was made entirely of white stone but was smoothed perfectly down so that no one could ever hope to scale it. At the sight of such a massive defensive structure, Iris almost felt silly coming all this way to warn them.
